Few sclerophyllous plants from the central coast of Chile have been systematically studied. This work describes the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial properties of Baccharis concava Pers. (sin. B. macraei), a shrub found in the first line and near the Pacific coast. B. concava has been traditionally used by indigenous inhabitants of today's central Chile for its medicinal properties. Few reports exist regarding the phytochemistry characterization and biological activities of B. concava. A hydroalcoholic extract of B. concava was prepared from leaves and small branches. Qualitative phytochemical characterization indicated the presence of alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic, and tannin compounds. The antimicrobial activity of this extract was assessed in a panel of microorganisms including Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and pathogenic yeasts. The extract displayed an important antimicrobial effect against Gram-positive bacteria, Candida albicans, and Cryptococcus neoformans but not against Gram-negatives, for which an intact Lipopolysaccharide is apparently the determinant of resistance to B. concava extracts. The hydroalcoholic extract was then fractionated through a Sephadex LH-20/methanol-ethyl acetate column. Afterward, the fractions were pooled according to a similar pattern visualized by TLC/UV analysis. Fractions obtained by this criterion were assessed for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The fraction presenting the most antimicrobial activity was HPLC-ESI-MS/MS, obtaining molecules related to caffeoylquinic acid, dicaffeoylquinic acid, and quercetin, among others. In conclusion, the extracts of B. concava showed strong antimicrobial activity, probably due to the presence of metabolites derived from phenolic acids, such as caffeoylquinic acid, and flavonoids, such as quercetin, which in turn could be responsible for helping with wound healing. In addition, the development of antimicrobial therapies based on the molecules found in B. concava could help to combat infection caused by pathogenic yeasts and Gram-positive bacteria, without affecting the Gram-negative microbiota.

Baccharis anomala DC. (BA) is a plant species found in the tropical regions of South America and is widely used for its hepatoprotective effects, as well as for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. Studies have recently reported its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. BA extract can reverse the activated phenotype of hepatic stellate cells (HSC), which plays a central role in extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition in the development of liver fibrosis. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of the treatment with BA extract on liver fibrosis in a CCl4-induced liver fibrosis model in BALB/c mice. Methanolic extract was obtained from BA leaves, a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to detect the compounds present was performed, and then administered by intraperitoneal injection in Balb/C mice at a concentration of 50 and 100 mg/kg together with the administration of CCl4 for inducing liver fibrosis. After 10 weeks, blood analysis, histopathology, oxidative stress, as well as protein and gene expression in the hepatic tissue were performed. Treatment with BA extract was able to reduce profibrotic markers by reducing the expression of α-SMA and Col-1 proteins, as well as reducing the formation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation. (BA extract showed anti-inflammatory effects in the liver by suppressing NF-kB activation and reducing gene expression of signaling targets (IL-6 and iNOS). The data obtained showed that BA extract has antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory effects.

This study investigated two outbreaks of spontaneous poisoning by Baccharis coridifolia (Asteraceae) in early-weaned beef calves in Tacuarembó, Uruguay. A total of 34 affected calves showed signs of salivation, anorexia, apathy, marked dehydration, and diarrhea. Deaths occurred 36-72 h after consumption and mortality varied from 37.5% to 43.3% for outbreak 1 and outbreak 2, respectively. The main pathological findings include diffuse severe necrosis of the prestomachs and lymphoid tissues. Ultrastructurally, epithelial cells of the rumen showed swelling, lysis of the organelles, degradation of intercellular attachments, and degradation of the nuclear chromatin. Using LC-MS with diagnostic fragmentation filtering, 56 macrocyclic trichothecenes including glycosyl and malonyl conjugates were identified. The total concentration of macrocyclic trichothecenes, including conjugates, was estimated to be 1.2 ± 0.1 mg/g plant material. This is the first report of these malonyl-glucose conjugates from Baccharis coridifolia.

New natural analgesic compounds that act in KORs are important alternatives for potential therapeutical use in medicine. In this work, we report and compare here the antinociceptive activity displayed by cyclic and linear diterpenes, obtained from the genus Baccharis. The antinociceptive activities determined were relatively strong, in comparison whit morphine. The antinociceptive mechanism of action was made through naloxone administration (a non-selective antagonist of opioid receptors). The more active compounds were vehiculized successfully in niosomes at nanometric scale. The observed antinociceptive activity for Bartemidiolide oxide (BARTO), obtain from Baccharis artemisioides, was greater than Flabeloic acid dimer (DACD), the first compound isolated from Baccharis flabellata that was reported possessing antinociceptive effects. We also conducted docking calculations and molecular dynamics simulations, which suggested that the newly identified diterpenes might share the molecular action mechanism reported for Salvinorin A (SalA). Molecular simulations have allowed us to appreciate some subtle differences between molecular interactions of these ligands stabilizing their respective complexes; such information might be useful for designing and searching for new inhibitors of KORs.

The extracts of five invasive plants were investigated for antifungal and antibiofilm activities against Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, and C. parapsilosis. The antifungal activity was evaluated using the microdilution assay and the antibiofilm effect by measurement of the metabolic activity. Ethanol and ethanol-water extracts of Reynoutria japonica leaves inhibited 50 % of planktonic cells at 250 µg mL-1 and 15.6 µg mL-1 , respectively. Ethanol and ethanol-water extracts of Baccharis halimifolia inhibited >75 % of the mature biofilm of C. albicans at 500 µg mL-1 . The essential oil (EO) of B. halimifolia leaves was the most active (50 % inhibition (IC50 ) at 4 and 74 µg mL-1 against the maturation phase and 24 h old-biofilms of C. albicans, respectively). Oxygenated sesquiterpenes were the primary contents in this EO (62.02 %), with ß-caryophyllene oxide as the major component (37 %). Aromadendrene oxide-(2), ß-caryophyllene oxide, and (±)-ß-pinene displayed significant activities against the maturation phase (IC50 =9-310 µ mol l-1 ) and preformed 24 h-biofilm (IC50 =38-630 µ mol l-1 ) of C. albicans with very low cytotoxicity for the first two compounds. C. albicans remained the most susceptible species to this EO and its components. This study highlighted for the first time the antibiofilm potential of B. halimifolia, its EO and some of its components.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Justicia procumbens L. (JP) (Oriental Water Willow, Shrimp plant, Acanthaceae) is a herbaceous plant that is commonly found in India, Taiwan, Australia, Southern China, Vietnam, and Korea. The plant has been primarily used to treat fever, asthma, edema, cough, jaundice, urinary tract infection, and sore throat, as well as for snake bites and as a fish-killer. In the present review, the reported phyto-chemical, ethno-pharmacological, biological, and toxicological studies on J. procumbens were summarized. Special focus had been given to its reported lignans, regarding their isolation, characterization, quantitative estimation, and biosynthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey of the literature was done using assorted databases and publishers; Scopus, Sci-Finder, Web of Science, PubMed, GoogleScholar, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Taylors&Francis, Bentham, Thieme, and Springer. RESULTS: Currently, 95 metabolites have been separated fromJ. procumbens. Lignans and their glycosides were reported as main phyto-constituents of J. procumbens. Various methods are mentioned for quantitative estimation of these lignans. These phyto-constituents possessed wide pharmacological effectiveness, such as antiplatelet aggregation, antimicrobial, antitumor, and antiviral. CONCLUSIONS: Many of the stated effects are harmonious with the reported traditional uses of this plant. This data could further support J. procumbens's utilization as a herbal remedy and drug lead. However, further study of J. procumbens toxicity, as well as preclinical and clinical investigation is required to ensure the safe usage of J. procumbens.

This study provides a comprehensive account of the various types of calcium oxalate crystals found in the genus Baccharis and assesses the exceptional value of crystal macropatterns for the taxonomy of the genus. The morphotype, occurrence, and chemical composition of the crystals found in the stems and leaves are studied. The 44 species included in this study were selected based on a broad phylogeny-based sampling covering seven subgenera and 31 sections. These species were chosen to represent all the main phylogenetic lineages of Baccharis; thus, the sampling also represents a comprehensive coverage concerning evolutionary significance for such a large and environmentally and economically important plant group. The samples were analyzed by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Several morphotypes of crystals, including druses, crystal sand, styloids and prisms, were present. Based on their chemical composition, the crystals were classified as pure calcium oxalate, mixtures of oxalates and sulfates, and mixtures of oxalates, sulfates, and silica. The crystal macropatterns observed in this study aid in species identification and provide novel data for the taxonomy of Baccharis. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Most species of Baccharis have a specific crystalline pattern. Each species produces a crystal morphotype or a set of morphotypes specific to it. The crystals observed are formed by calcium oxalate.

Intestinal helminthiasis is a neglected disease that affects a significant portion of the global population, specifically in developing countries, where medicinal plants are widely used for therapeutic purposes. With the purpose to identify the native species used in traditional Brazilian medicine for the management of helminthiasis, ethnopharmacological books edited in Brazil documenting the folk use of medicinal plants were analyzed. The native species cited in at least three studies were selected, and bibliographic research was performed using electronic databases to identify their scientifically validated anthelmintic properties. The search retrieved 133 native species belonging to 88 genera and 43 families from all six Brazilian biomes. Fabaceae (14 Genera and 25 Species) and Asteraceae (7 Genera and 8 Species) were the most frequently cited families. The most reported native species were Baccharis crispa Spreng., Hymenaea courbaril L., Senna occidentalis (L.) Link, Carapa guianensis Aubl., Stachytarpheta cayennensis (Rich.) Vahl, Annona glabra L., Hymenaea stigonocarpa Mart. ex Hayne, Spigelia anthelmia L., Simarouba versicolor A.St.-Hil. and Anacardium occidentale L. Bark (19%) and leaves (17%) were the most commonly used plant parts, and decoction (27%) was the most preferred method of preparation. Evidence of the anthelmintic properties of most species was confirmed using in vitro assays for key human and animal parasites, including Haemonchus contortus, Hymenolepis diminuta, Schistosoma mansoni and Trichostrongylus spp. The species S. alata, S. occidentalis, A. occidentale, and S. anthelmia have been the subject of many biological studies, supporting their use as vermicides. The overall results obtained in this review revealed that Brazil is rich in traditional herbal medicines used to manage helminthiasis; however pharmacological investigations are lacking to confirm their therapeutic properties. Thus, this study could serve as a baseline to validate their use and encourage further clinical investigation of their vermifuge potential.

Transcending pairwise interactions in ecological networks remains a challenge.1,2,3,4,5 Higher-order interactions (HOIs), the modulation of a pairwise interaction by a third species,6 are thought to play a particularly important role in stabilizing coexistence and maintaining species diversity.7,8,9,10,11,12 However, HOIs have so far only been demonstrated in models9,10,11,12,13,14 or isolated experimental systems including only a few interacting species.7,8,15 Their ubiquity and importance at a community level in the real world remain unknown. We hypothesized that a complex network of HOIs could be constantly modifying pairwise interactions and shaping ecological communities and that consequently the outcome of pairwise interactions would be a product of many influences from distinct sources. Using field experiments, we tested how multiple interactions within a diverse arthropod community associated with the tropical shrub Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. (Asteraceae) were modified by the removal of ant species or live or hatched insect galls (a non-trophic engineering effect) of the dominant galler species. We revealed an extensive hidden network of HOIs modifying each other and the "visible" pairwise interactions. Most pairwise interactions were affected indirectly by the manipulation of non-interacting taxonomic groups. The pervasiveness of these interaction modifications challenges pairwise approaches to understanding interaction outcomes and could shift our thinking about the structure and persistence of ecological communities. Investigating coexistence mechanisms involving interaction modulation by HOIs may be key to elucidating the underlying causes of the stability and persistence of ecological communities.

Endemic in 21 countries, Chagas disease, also known as American Trypanosomiasis, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The available drugs for the treatment of this disease, benznidazole and nifurtimox, are outdated and display severe side effects. Thus, the discovery of new drugs is crucial. Based on our continuous studies aiming towards the discovery of natural products with anti-T. cruzi potential, the MeOH extract from aerial parts of Baccharis sphenophylla Dusén ex. Malme (Asteraceae) displayed activity against this parasite and was subjected to high-performance countercurrent chromatography (HPCCC), to obtain one unreported syn-labdane diterpene - sphenophyllol (1) - as well as the known compounds gaudichaudol C (2), ent-kaurenoic acid (3), hispidulin (4), eupafolin (5), and one mixture of di-O-caffeoylquinic acids (6-8). Compounds 1-8 were characterized by analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) data. When tested against trypomastigote forms, isolated labdane diterpenes 1 and 2 displayed potent activity, with EC50 values of 20.1 µM and 2.9 µM, respectively. The mixture of chlorogenic acids 6-8, as well as the isolated flavones 4 and 5, showed significant activity against the clinically relevant amastigotes, with EC50 values of 24.9, 12.8, and 2.7 µM, respectively. Nonetheless, tested compounds 1-8 displayed no cytotoxicity against mammalian cells (CC50 > 200 µM). These results demonstrate the application of HPCCC as an important tool to isolate bioactive compounds from natural sources, including the antitrypanosomal extract from B. sphenophylla, allowing for the development of novel strategic molecular prototypes against tropical neglected diseases.

O Diabetes desde a antiguidade tem sido uma das maiores causas de morte entre as populações do globo, e segundo a Organização Mundial da Saúde continua assolando nos nossos dias. Apesar das descobertas de tratamentos mais eficazes, a doença vem avançando em progressões assustadoras atualmente, com projeções preocupantes para a saúde pública. Como estratégia de acompanhamento terapêutico, estatístico direcionado a portadores de diabetes, o Governo Federal lançou o programa HIPERDIA (Hipertensos e Diabéticos), que faz o acompanhamento da evolução da doença e das complicações dos pacientes. E neste sentido, também são utilizadas terapêuticas mais acessíveis como as plantas medicinais. O objetivo desta pesquisa consiste em realizar uma revisão bibliográfica abordando as opções de terapias de controle do diabetes oferecidas no Sistema Único de Saúde e pesquisar fitoterápicos com potencial hipoglicêmico aprovados pela Anvisa. Através de levantamento bibliográfico, foram identificadas oito espécies vegetais utilizadas pela medicina popular no controle do diabetes, sendo estas: Bauhinia Forficata, Syzygium Cumini, Annona Muricata, Cynara Scolymus, Momordica Charantia, Eugenia Uniflora e Baccharis Trimera. Essas plantas do programa, embora tenham comprovação de seu efeito hipoglicêmico e redutores dos sintomas diabéticos, pelas suas propriedades antioxidantes e antiinflamatórias, colabora para uma melhor qualidade de vida aos pacientes.


Since antiquity, Diabetes has been one of the biggest causes of death amon-g populations around the globe, and according to the World Health Organization, it continues to plague our days. Despite discoveries of more effective treatments, the disease is currently advancing in frightening progressions, with worrying projections for public health. As a therapeutic, statistical follow-up strategy aimed at people with diabetes, the Federal Government launched the HIPERDIA (Hypertensive and Diabetic) program, which monitors the evolution of the disease and the complications of patients. And in this sense, more accessible therapies such as medicinal plants are also used. The objective of this research is to carry out a literature review addressing the options for diabetes control therapies offered in the Unified Health System and to search for herbal medicines with hypoglycemic potential approved by Anvisa. Through a bibliographical survey, eight plant species used by folk medicine to control diabetes were identified, namely: Bauhinia Forficata, Syzygium Cumini, Annona Muricata, Cynara Scolymus, Momordica Charantia, Eugenia Uniflora and Bacharis Trimera. These plants in the program, although they have evidence of their hypoglycemic effect and reduce diabetic symptoms, due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, contribute to a better quality of life for patients.


La diabetes ha sido desde la antigüedad una de las principales causas de muerte entre las poblaciones del planeta, y según la Organización Mundial de la Salud sigue haciendo estragos en nuestros días. A pesar de los descubrimientos de tratamientos más eficaces, la enfermedad avanza actualmente con una progresión aterradora, con proyecciones preocupantes para la salud pública. Como estrategia de seguimiento terapéutico, estadísticamente dirigida a las personas con diabetes, el Gobierno Federal puso en marcha el programa HIPERDIA (Hipertensión y Diabetes), que controla la evolución de la enfermedad y las complicaciones de los pacientes. En este sentido, también se utilizan terapias más accesibles, como las plantas medicinales. El objetivo de esta investigación es realizar una revisión bibliográfica que aborde las opciones de terapias para el control de la diabetes ofrecidas en el Sistema Único de Salud y buscar fitoterapias con potencial hipoglucemiante aprobadas por Anvisa. Mediante un estudio bibliográfico, se identificaron ocho especies vegetales utilizadas por la medicina popular en el control de la diabetes, a saber: Bauhinia Forficata, Syzygium Cumini, Annona Muricata, Cynara Scolymus, Momordica Charantia, Eugenia Uniflora y Baccharis Trimera. Estas plantas del programa, aunque han demostrado su efecto hipoglucemiante y reductor de los síntomas diabéticos, por sus propiedades antioxidantes y antiinflamatorias, colaboran a una mejor calidad de vida para los pacientes.

In the whole of Argentina and Chile, southern South America in this paper, 20 species of the genus Aphis hosted in species of Asteraceae were known; eleven of them are native South American, and those introduced are mostly polyphagous and widespread. The Chilean regions and the Argentine provinces in which each one of them is known, as well as the host plants on which it has been recorded, are listed. New data of 15 of them are presented, with several first records in different Argentine provinces or hosted on diverse plants: The knowledge of A. conspicua and A. fuentesi, which were recently described living on species of Baccharis, is improved from specimens respectively collected on Senecio and Gutierrezia. A. rogerblackmani Nieto Nafra, Ortego Mier Durante sp. n. is described from apterous and alate viviparous females, oviparous females and males collected on Baccharis in Argentina. Other four species are described from apterous and alate viviparae: A. gutierreziae Ortego, Mier Durante Nieto Nafra sp. n., collected on species of Gutierrezia in Argentina, A. hyalis Mier Durante, Nieto Nafra Ortego sp. n., collected on Hyalis argentea in Argentina, A. pulverea Nieto Nafra, Moreno-Gonzlez Ortego sp. n., collected on species of Senecio in Chile and Argentina, and A. sanrafaelina Ortego, Mier Durante Nieto Nafra sp. n., collected on Tagetes mendocina, Thymophylla pentachaeta and Pectis odorata in Argentina. The intraspecific diversity of Aphis pulverea has been analysed by a principal component analysis followed by hierarchical clustering of principal components. An identification key to viviparous females of the species of Aphis hosted in Asteraceae and known in southern South America is presented.

INTRODUCTION: Capillary zone electrophoresis with direct UV detection (CZE-UV) was used to investigate the hypothesis about the extract of Baccharis trimera enzymatic activities as an analytical approach to monitoring the phenomenon. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to investigate enzymatic bioactivities of the hydroalcoholic and infusion extracts of B. trimera through screening evaluation of the inhibition of the enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and α-glycosidase (α-GLY). METHOD: An alternative approach using CZE-UV to hydroalcoholic and infusion extracts of B. trimera monitoring was applied to evaluate the inhibition ability of the enzymes AChE and α-GLY. The result of the reaction of acetylthiocholine (AThCh) with AChE was thiocholine (TCh) and acetic acid, and from the amount of TCh generated, the AChE inhibition was calculated. For the inhibition study of the two enzymes, the reactions of the extracts were optimised to be performed in situ, inside the capillary column, and the introduction of the solutions was performed through ordered sequential plug injections. RESULTS: Samples extracted with 70% ethanol presented 7.80% inhibition for AChE and 0.51% for α-GLY, while samples extracted with 96% ethanol resulted in 6.89% inhibition for AChE and no inhibition activity for α-GLY. CONCLUSION: In the present work, the potentialities of CZE-UV for the study of hydroalcoholic and infusion extracts of B. trimera were demonstrated. The experimental results were useful for the calculation of the percentage of the inhibition activities of the AChE and α-GLY enzymes.

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is the leading cause of canine pyoderma. Honeybee products are common to treat this and other types of infections. High average annual population loss of bees has been observed. This study evaluated antibacterial and antibiofilm profile of Green Propolis and Baccharis dracunculifolia against S. pseudintermedius and the chemical similarities among both. Ethanolic extracts were produced and chemically characterized. The isolates were subjected to treatment with the extracts in both planktonic and sessile forms. Green propolis minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.156 mg / mL, and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 0.312mg / mL. Baccharis dracunculifolia extract MIC and MBC was 0.312mg / mL and 2.5 mg / mL, respectivelly. Both extracts reduced SD55 formation of biofilm at minimum inhibitory concentration and at 1/8 minimum inhibitory concentration. The results observed in relation to ED99, were similar for both extracts. Besides that, similar chemical indicators between both extracts, including the presence of Artepellin C, suggest that the Baccharis dracunculifolia extract could be an alternative to the Green Propolis extract in the treatment of staph infections.

Plant microbiota is usually enriched with bacteria producers of secondary metabolites and represents a valuable source of novel species and compounds. Here, we analyzed the diversity of culturable root-associated bacteria of the medicinal native plant Baccharis trimera (Carqueja) and screened promising isolates for their antimicrobial properties. The rhizobacteria were isolated from the endosphere and rhizosphere of B. trimera from Ponta Grossa and Ortigueira localities and identified by sequencing and restriction analysis of the 16S rDNA. The most promising isolates were screened for antifungal activities and the production of siderophores and biosurfactants. B. trimera presented a diverse community of rhizobacteria, constituted of 26 families and 41 genera, with a predominance of Streptomyces and Bacillus genera, followed by Paenibacillus, Staphylococcus, Methylobacterium, Rhizobium, Tardiphaga, Paraburkholderia, Burkholderia, and Pseudomonas. The more abundant genera were represented by different species, showing a high diversity of the microbiota associated to B. trimera. Some of these isolates potentially represent novel species and deserve further examination. The communities were influenced by both the edaphic properties of the sampling locations and the plant niches. Approximately one-third of the rhizobacteria exhibited antifungal activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and a high proportion of isolates produced siderophores (25%) and biosurfactants (42%). The most promising isolates were members of the Streptomyces genus. The survey of B. trimera returned a diverse community of culturable rhizobacteria and identified potential candidates for the development of plant growth-promoting and protection products, reinforcing the need for more comprehensive investigations of the microbiota of Brazilian native plants and habitats.

This study presents the cytotoxic activity evaluation of the natural diterpenes ent-kaurenoic acid (1) and its 15ß-hydroxy (2), 15ß-senecioyloxy (3), and 15ß-tiglinoyloxy (4) derivatives, isolated from Brazilian native plants, Baccharis retusa and B. lateralis (Asteraceae). Using the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) colorimetric assay, it was observed that compound 1 displayed in vitro activity towards the aggressive MDA-MB-231 adenocarcinoma cell line and reduced toxicity against MCF-10A nontumorigenic epithelial cells, indicating expressive selectivity. On the contrary, compounds 2-4 exhibited reduced toxicity and selectivity in both tested cell lines. Based on the chemical structures of compounds 1-4, it is suggested that the presence of additional functional groups at the C-15 position-a hydroxyl group in compound 2 and isomeric isoprene units in compounds 3 and 4-might be responsible for the reduction in the potential/selectivity. In silico studies show, for compounds 1-4, good predictions regarding bioavailability and ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) properties as well as no alerts for PAINS (pan-assay structures interference). In conclusion, ent-kaurenoic acid (1), a common diterpenoid isolated in high amounts from different plants belonging to the Baccharis genus, has been shown to be a promising cytotoxic agent against an aggressive adenocarcinoma cell line (MDA-MB-23) and, if well exploited, could be used as a scaffold in the development of molecular prototypes for the treatment of breast cancer.

The concern regarding the harm caused by biocides to human health has been increasing over the years, making the natural products an alternative to less toxic and more efficient biocides. Therefore, this paper reports the investigation of the disinfectant potential of extracts and isolated compounds from Baccharis dracunculifolia. For this purpose, extracts of aerial parts (BD-C), tricomial wash (BD-L) and roots (BD-R) of B. dracunculifolia were obtained by maceration. The extracts were submitted to different chromatographic techniques, including high-speedy countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) furnishing nine isolated compounds. The extracts and isolated compounds were evaluated regarding their antimicrobial activity by the broth microdilution method, according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, and regarding their sanitizing activity according to Standard Operating Procedure No. 65·3210·007 (INCQS, 2011), developed by the National Institute for Quality Control in Health (INCQS) - Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). In the antimicrobial evaluation the BD-C extract showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 200 and 100 µg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and Tricophyton mentagrophytes, respectively. BD-L extract showed MIC value of 200 µg/ml against S. aureus. The isolated compounds caffeic acid (MBC 2·22 µmol l-1 ), ferulic acid (MBC 2·06 µmol l-1 ) and baccharin (MBC 0·27 µmol l-1 ) showed significant inhibitory activity against S. aureus. All B. dracunculifolia isolated compounds were active with exception of aromadrendin-4´-O-methyl-ether for T. mentagrophytes. Additionally, isosakuranetin was active against Salmonella choleraesuis (MIC 1·4 µmol l-1 ). Regarding the sanitizing activity, the hydroalcoholic solution containing 0·2% of B. dracunculifolia extract in 40°GL ethanol was effective in eliminating the microbial contamination on all carrier cylinders and against all microorganisms evaluated in the recommended exposure time of 10 min. Therefore, B. dracunculifolia has potential for the development of sanitizing agents to be used in hospitals, food manufactures and homes.

We provide new information on Neotropical Phyllocnistis Zeller (Gracillariidae) associated with Baccharis (Asteraceae) in the Andes region. Two new species are described, P. canta Cerdea Farfn, n. sp. and P. elongata Cerdea Farfn, n. sp., from the western slopes of the Andes of Peru between 2,000 and 3,000 m elevation, both associated with Baccharis latifolia (R.P.) Pers. The type locality of P. baccharidis Hering is confirmed; immature stages were found at 1,300 m feeding on Baccharis tucumanensis Hook. Arn. in Quebrada las Higueras (Tucumn, Argentina). Four new locality records for P. furcata Vargas Cerdea are provided, extending its distribution by 450 km to the north of the type locality.

In this study, the in vitro antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiproliferative and cytotoxic activities of essential oil from Baccharis parvidentata Malag. (EO-Bp) and Lippia origanoides Kunth (EO-Lo) were explored. The relevant effects were observed against the parasitic protozoans Plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania amazonensis (ranging 0.6 to 39.7 µg/mL) and malignant MCF-7, MCF-7/HT, 22Rv1, and A431 cell lines (ranging 6.1 to 31.5 µg/mL). In parallel, EO-Bp showed better selective indexes in comparison with EO-Lo against peritoneal macrophages from BALB/c mice and MRC-5 cell line. In conclusion, EO-Lo is known to show a wide range of health benefits that could be added as another potential use of this oil with the current study. In the case of EO-Bp, the wide spectrum of its activities against protozoal parasites and malignant cells, as well as its selectivity in comparison with non-malignant cells, could suggest an interesting candidate for further tests as a new therapeutic alternative.
